Introduction to psychology first aid
- Definition and principles of PFA.
- Understanding the psychological impact of crises and disasters.
Core PFA actions
- Contact and engagement: building trust and rapport with individuals in distress; effective communication techniques.
- Safety and comfort: establishing a sense of safety for those affected; providing comfort and reassurance.
- Stabilisation: techniques for stabilising individuals emotionally; identifying immediate needs and addressing them.
Recognising and responding to distress
- Signs of psychological distress in the aftermath of a crisis; strategies for immediate response.
Self-care for responders
- Importance of self-care for those providing psychological support.
- Strategies for maintaining personal well-being.
Integration into existing emergency response plans
- Strategies for integrating PFA into overall emergency response plans.
- Collaborative approaches with other first responders.
